The Art of Glass
ART OF GLASS STUDENTS: NATIONAL
& INTERNATIONAL WORK
May 23-July 8, 1999
The Visual Arts Center of Tidewater Community College partnered in
ART
OF GLASS, a regional collaboration of 12 institutions exhibiting contemporary
glass.
The Visual Arts Center, Portsmouth, Virginia
Our role in the partnership
was a four-part exhibition. First, ART OF GLASS STUDENTS: NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL WORK, was an exhibition of glass work made by
75 students studying at 18 institutions in the United States and
abroad.
A student glass survey of this magnitude coupled with new college
level glass studio courses at the VAC created major opportunities
for regional glass enthusiasts.
We were also pleased to
exhibit the cast, figurative works of Kent Ipsen, artist and VCU's
Glass Department Director. In large black and white prints, photographer
and VAC instructor Tom Siegmund documented the process of glassmaking.
Finally, the VAC's façade was illuminated by the neon installation
of Ken Daley, artist and professor at ODU.
Together the elements of this exhibition illustrated the major approaches
to glassmaking, captured a sense of the magic of it all, and introduced us
in the roundest way to students who want to live their lives in the art
of glass.
