Service Learning Introduction
Introduction
Service-Learning is receiving unprecedented recognition for its value to
students, higher education, and community. Service-Learning programs consist
of four main roles: the student, the college instructor, the Service-Learning
staff, and the community partner.
The importance of the community service site cannot be underestimated.
In fact, successful Service-Learning is dependent on the level of partnership
and collaboration between community partners and the educational institution.
Ultimately, this manual is about understanding and developing this critical
partnership. This requires a considerable commitment of time, resources,
and effort on your part; however, the results for your agency, the Service-Learning
students, and our community can be dramatic and transformational. Here are
some guidelines to forming and maintaining a successful relationship with
Tidewater Community College:
Interview and select candidate(s) for Service-Learning placement. Provide
student with a brief job description.
Confirm placement with the student and sign a copy of the "Student,
Instructor, and Agency Agreement."
Provide an orientation, clear instructions, and training. The orientation
should leave the student with the feeling that he or she is accepted. A
handbook or other materials that are-available should be distributed during
orientation. Not only does this help the student feel welcome to the agency,
but also it reinforces that which was learned in the session and helps him/her
remember pertinent points. The orientation should include the following:
- A tour of the facility.
- An introduction to the staff.
- A review of the rules, regulations, policy, dress codes, and other requirements
- A discussion of the service learner's role, including specific tasks
and specific benefits to the agency.
- An explanation of any jargon or language used by the staff.
Provide written materials to supplement training.
Provide on-site supervision.
Complete evaluation forms as required by Tidewater Community College.
Meet with TCC representatives or instructors if requested.
