The 37th Annual Student Art Show was held in the galleries of Tidewater Community College’s Visual Arts Center (VAC), March 30 through April 27, 2008. Featuring over 250 works by more than 150 students, media included drawing, painting, photography, glass, ceramics, sculpture, computer generated imagery and mixed media. Works were created for art classes since last May, and represented program courses in Fine Arts, Photography, Graphic Design, Pottery and Glassblowing.
Robert Sites, Professor of Art, Norfolk State University, was this year’s judge. The Awards Presentation took place Saturday, April 5, 2008, 11 a.m., at the Commodore Theatre, 421 High Street, Portsmouth. At the event, Sites presented over $4,500 in awards in recognition of artistic excellence.
Complementary programming for the exhibition included illustrated lectures by a Visiting Artist and a Visiting Art Historian. On Tuesday, April 8, Liz Brown, Photographer, 217DESIGN Photography, New York, presented The Importance of Style in Image-Making. On Wednesday, April 16, Kelly Conway, Curator of Glass, Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, presented The Quest for Beauty: Exploring the Inspirations of Louis Comfort Tiffany.
