The 38th Annual Student Art Show

The 38th Annual Student Art Show was held in the galleries of Tidewater Community College's Visual Arts Center (VAC), March 29 through April 26, 2009. Featuring over 200 works by more than 100 students, media included drawing, painting, photography, glass, ceramics, sculpture, computer generated imagery and mixed media. Works were created for art classes since last May, and represented program courses in Fine Arts, Photography, Graphic Design, Pottery and Glassblowing.

Nicole McCormick Santiago, Assistant Professor of Art at The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, was this year's judge. The Awards Presentation took place Saturday, April 4, 2009, 11 a.m., at the Commodore Theatre, 421 High Street, Portsmouth. During the event, Santiago presented over $4,600 in awards in recognition of artistic excellence. The Opening Reception followed the presentation of awards at noon at the VAC.

Complementary programming for the exhibition included illustrated lectures by a Visiting Artist and a Visiting Art Historian. On Tuesday, April 14, Ryan Gothrup, Glass Artist, MFA Candidate at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, presented Art Glass and Glass as an Art Material. On Wednesday, April 22, Gary E. Baker, Glass Historian, Appraiser and Consultant in Decorative Arts, Norfolk, presented Collecting Glass for the Chrysler.
