The exhibition, Marks on Paper: Allyson Mellberg Taylor, Ken Morgan and Ellis Hinnant-Will, was held at the Visual Arts Center, TCC at Olde Towne, Portsmouth, Virginia, from January 25 through March 12, 2009. The Opening Reception took place on Saturday, January 24 at 7 p.m.
Marks on Paper featured work by three artists who explore the use of narrative. In her mixed media drawings and sculptures, Allyson Mellberg Taylor (Charlottesville, VA) portrays the physical consequences of our chemically saturated environment through her representations of sick and emotionally void characters. These pieces strongly urge us to reconsider our connection with the natural world.
Comprised of simples lines and gestures, the small-scale work by Ken Morgan (Coventry, CT) convey a lyrical energy. Born into a family of circus acrobats, his imagery recalls impressions of his unusual childhood. Using mainly pen and ink on paper, the artist's expressive drawings provide a refreshing escape from our technology-obsessed world.
Ellis Hinnant-Will (Virginia Beach, VA) provided the viewer with insights into her experiences of living, working and traveling among other cultures. With an emphasis on color and texture, these mixed media works are responses to emotional and creative challenges confronting the artist.
