The exhibition, spaces/places/senses/places/senses/spaces, was held at the Visual Arts Center, TCC at Olde Towne, Portsmouth, Virginia, from September 19 through November 5, 2009.
Spaces/places/senses/places/senses/spaces featured work in various media by three artists. The work was site specific and engaged both the intellect and the senses.
Elizabeth Mead (Williamsburg, VA) presented drawings and sculpture that convey her physical and metaphysical place in the world. Influenced by German philosopher, Martin Heidegger, Mead constantly redefines what constitutes her place in the world. In effect she explores the meaning of “being.”
Henrietta Simson and Jo Volley (London, England) are collaborating artists (Simson&Volley). Their work imported environmental components, such as light, sound and imagery, of Portsmouth, England to Portsmouth, Virginia. It explored the relationship between memory and place, and alludes to the poetic possibilities contained within the sea. Using drawings, projected imagery, transfers and sound, the work also dealt with the process of perception. |
