The 42nd Annual Student Art & Design Exhibition will be held in the galleries of Tidewater Community College’s Visual Arts Center (VAC), March 23 through April 21, 2013. Featuring over 200 works by more than 100 students, works have been created for art classes since last May, and represent program courses in Studio Arts, Photography, Graphic Design, Ceramics and Glassblowing.
Chris Tompkins, Professor of Art, Norfolk State University, is this year’s judge. The Awards Presentation will take place Saturday, March 30, 2013, 11 a.m., at the Commodore Theatre, 421 High Street, Portsmouth. During the event, Tompkins will present over $4,900 in awards in recognition of artistic excellence. The Opening Reception will immediately follow the Presentation at noon at the VAC.
Complementary programming for the exhibition includes illustrated lectures by a Visiting Artist and a Visiting Graphic Designer. On Tuesday, April 2, Robin Rogers, Assistant Professor of Art at Virginia Wesleyan College, and Assistant Manager of the Chrysler Museum of Art Glass Studio, will present My Life in Glass. On Wednesday, April 10, Bizhan Khodabandeh, Communications Director of VCU’s Communication Arts Department,and Founder of Mended Arrow, will present Voice By Design. Both programs will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the VAC, rooms 208 and 209.
