Mentoring Partnership

The Mentoring Partnership matches women working in non-traditional fields with female students enrolled in A.A.S./Certificate programs at Tidewater Community College. Students pursuing these non-traditional careers have weekly access, via e-mail, telephone or personal contact, to women working in the students' field of study.

Mentors and mentees are introduced and given program guidelines at the start of their mentorship. Once the goals and terms of the mentoring relationship are established, a Mentoring Partnership Agreement is executed. The mentoring relationship will continue as long as it is mutually beneficial. Both parties will be asked to complete a questionnaire every other month and a final evaluation.

A successful mentoring partnership is a commitment of time and effort to which neither party should enter without careful consideration. Students are expected to be mindful of mentors' time and professionalism.

Mentors are not expected to have all the answers to students' questions.Mentors are expected to provide:

  • Insights into their field
  • Practical guidance on career options
  • Advice on academic preparation
  • Information on networking and/or internship opportunities
  • Encouragement
