         Welding at TCC

Elizabeth Alley, TCC Welding Student

I would like to tell you a little about why I like welding so much. First of all it is kind of like a love/hate relationship (lol!). I really took an interest in welding when the construction company was working on the new bridge over the Pamunkey River here in West Point. They were working so high (words do not describe) up over the river and it just looked so cool! So much went into that bridge that I began to consider studying industrial technology.

I've always had a fascination for lightning.  What’s the closest thing you can do to take control of electricity and work with it in your hands? Welding was the first thing that came to my mind. I took a picture a while back that might explain my fascination.

I began my first Welding class at Rappahannock Community College but transferred to Tidewater Community College, where the welding facilities are much better.   All of the teachers I have met so far are excellent. They truly are Master Modern Molten Metal Manipulators.

It is very fascinating to see professional welders at work.

One of my first instructors worked at a shipyard.  When I seriously began thinking how much metal work goes into creating ships and aircraft and how much work it is, it really upped my enthusiasm. I've been thinking about getting into metal fabrication over there once I get my welding certificate.
