TCC’s Academy for Nonprofit Excellence earns renewal funding

Tidewater Community College’s Academy for Nonprofit Excellence will continue to be an integral resource for nonprofit professionals, thanks to the renewal of a Hampton Roads Community Foundation grant.

The Community Foundation recently awarded $148,350 to TCC, which will allow the academy to continue to meet the professional development and training needs of staff, board members and volunteers in the nonprofit sector.

The foundation has supported the academy since its inception in 2004.

“Thirteen years ago, the foundation partnered with Tidewater Community College to establish a high quality, affordable and convenient professional development program for the region’s nonprofits. We could not be more pleased with how this partnership has evolved,” said Deborah M. DiCroce, president and CEO of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.

“TCC’s Academy for Nonprofit Excellence consistently delivers cutting-edge courses taught by expert academics and practitioners who help our nonprofit professionals do their best work. The partnership is a marvelous example of the power of collaboration.” 

Nonprofit professionals or those seeking employment in the nonprofit field can attend half- and one-day courses in topics that include social media, grant writing and crisis communication. Classes are taught by experts in their respective fields.

The academy will continue its Nonprofit Executive Roundtable Series on July 20 with a program titled “Implementing Strategic Partnerships” at the South Norfolk Public Library in Chesapeake.

The session, led by Paddy Morton, an attorney with extensive nonprofit partnership experience, and Melissa Sines, a governance expert, will provide an overview of the different kinds of partnerships within the nonprofit sector and the collective impact they make.

Registration is $125, including lunch. The Obici Healthcare Foundation is the presenting sponsor.

On Aug. 1, the academy and VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads will hold their annual 757 Nonprofit Collaborative welcome breakfast to recognize local nonprofit professionals who have moved into leadership positions in the last year.

More than 1,650 nonprofit professionals affiliated with as many as 600 nonprofits have taken academy classes. This spring the academy graduated its 119th student, who earned a Certificate of Nonprofit Management.

The certificate requires a graduate to earn 10 continuing education units (CEUs) with five of those coming from each of the academy’s five core areas ranging from human resources to finance to risk management.
