Identifying Factors
A factor is the product of numbers or variables or both.
In the expression 12xy, 12, x, and y are factors.

With numbers we can also say that 1,2,3,4,6 and 12 are factors of 12 since each number divdes into 12 evenly.

Since many products give 12 (1 x 12, 2 x 6, 3 x 4) we agree to write only the prime factors which equal the number.  Thus we would write
12= 2 x 2 x 3 since 2 and 3 are primes.

Primes are numbers whose only divisors are itself and 1.  A few primes are:  2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19 etc.  (Notice 1 is not a prime)
