AMERICAN MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAM OPEN ENROLLMENT COURSES
 

Tidewater Community College offering the American Management Assoication (AMA) Business Communication Management program via open enrollment beginning April 27, 2009, and is presented by TCC in cooperation with the American Management Association (AMA).

"Suggested Curriculum" for the Business Communication Management program includes the completion of 100 clock hours of instruction (10 CEUs), in both core and ellective courses of your choice, as follows:

Recommended core courses:

Communication Skills for ManagersUtilize techniques to improve your communication skills by increasing reading, writing, speaking, and listening proficiency. Gain the skills to communicate clearly and correctly to avoid misunderstanding and get your message across. Learn how to develop and use your listening skills to solve problems, diffuse conflict, teach staff, and be a more productive manager or team leader.  [20 clock hours (2 CEUs).]

Fundamentals of Business Writing:  Employees will practice how to analyze their purpose and audience, organize the content of the document, write a lightning-fast draft and finally, revise like an expert editor.  This course includes tools for eliminating procrastination, including Purpose and Audience Analysis Sheet, brainstorming techniques and Editor’s Checklist. [10 clock hours (1 CEU).]

How to Sharpen Your Business Writing Skills:  This course is packed with techniques that professional writers use to research, draft, compose and edit their work-plus strategies to conduct quick and effective online research and create safe and savvy email. The result is more effective and polished writing that will help every professional move ahead.   [20 clock hours (2 CEUs).]

 

Electives courses:

Interpersonal Communication Skills in the Workplace:  This course provides the basic communication theory as it applies to the workplace, plus “real-life” scenarios that demonstrate the use of effective interpersonal communication.  Employees will improve their skills in active listening, giving and receiving criticism, dealing with different personalities, and using body language to reinforce the message.  [10 clock hours (1 CEU).]

 

 

Electives courses (continued):

Planning and Leading Productive Meetings:  Helps both leaders and participants conduct meetings that result in better decision making, broader buy-in and clear conflict resolution.  Students will learn how to manage the process and facilitate with skill, conduct follow-ups, use media tools and enhance group dynamics. [20 clock hours (2 CEUs).]

Successful Interviewing:  Techniques for Hiring, Coaching and Performance Management Meetings: 

In this course you develop skills needed to conduct 12 different types of business interviews and ensure legal compliance. Learn how to prepare effective interviews as well as manage telephone and written interviews productively. This course will help you sharpen skills such as open-ended questioning, active listening, and reading body language; all essential in a variety of management situations.  [20 clock hours (2 CEUs).]

Planning and Managing Change:  This course provides managers with the knowledge and skills to manage change proactively, thereby avoiding the knee-jerk reactions that undermine efforts to deal with the organizational and human issues that accompany change.  Mangers will develop insights to help lead others through the change process and foster adaptability and continuous learning—critical traits for winning and keeping a competitive advantage.   [20 clock hours (2 CEUs).]

The Grammar and Proofreading Course: This course presents the keys of writing: from putting the first words on paper to the final polishing and proofreading.  Students will learn how to edit their writing for better clarity, cut excess words, use transitional phrases, recognize and correct run-on sentences and overcome procrastination and impulsive writing.  [10 clock hours (1 CEU).]

Note:  There are several other Business Communication Management elective to choose from that will be offer during the Fall 2009 Semester.  They include:  Business Writing When English is a Second Language, Delegating for Business Success, How to Be an Effective Facilitator, How to Write a Business Plan, Presentation Success:  How to Plan, Prepare and Deliver Effective Presentations, and Successful Negotiating.

Cost

$215 for 10 clock hours (1 CEU) and $280 for 20 clock hours (2 CEUs).  Includes textbook and course materials.
