Registered Apprenticeship Career Expo Night - Thursday, July 26
The divisino of Registered Apprenticeship and the Virginia Tidewater Consortium's (VTC) Educational Opportunity Center will be hosting a "Registered Apprenticeship Career Expo Night" for all registered sponsors/employers affiliated with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry Apprenticeship in the Tidewater Region. The Expo is open to the general public. A great opportunity to meet employers that can offer potential employment as an apprentice. Remember to bring your resume and to impress.

Regular and Speciality Martime Courses
TCC offers regularly scheduled courses related to ship repair in: welding; machine tool operations; marine diesel repair; air conditioning, heating and refrigeration; and industrial supervision. In addition, specialty courses in ship repair have been developed to prepare employees in skill areas identified by industry employers. These courses are offered by request on-site at shipyards and after hours at TCC campuses.

The Smart Center
The SMART Center creates synergy among maritime and transportation industries and educational professionals building a highly skilled and educated workforce, linking registered apprenticeship with academic credentials. Through the development of career pathways students earning career studies certificates can accumulate credits toward associate and baccalaureate degrees.

- ETR 193 Connecterization | 2 credits
- Fabrication and repair of shipboard Electrical/Electronic Multipin cables. Cable identification, preparation, assembly and quality assurance inspection process.
- IND 105 Nondestructive Inspections and Testing | 3 credits
- Studies nondestructive inspection and testing methods as they relate to industry. May include radiographic (RT), ultrasonic (UT), eddy current (ET), magnetic particle (MT), and liquid penetrant (PT) or other methods of testing.
- IND 115 Materials and Processes of Industry | 4 credits
- Studies industrial/engineering material and contemporary processes for the manufacture of products. Investigates the material’s nature, structure and properties. Examines the processes and their effects on materials.
- IND 145 Introduction to Metrology | 3 credits
- Studies principles of measurement and calibration control, application of statistics to measurement processes, and standards of measurements in calibration. May include the use of gauges and instruments in modern production and dimensional control concepts. Lecture and Laboratory.
- IND 216 Plant Layout and Materials Handling | 3 credits
- Examines arrangement and layout of physical facilities. Explains material handling and modern techniques for efficient utilization of space. Lecture and Laboratory.

Apprentices begin their careers in one of 19 waterfront trades and complete
foundational coursework taught by highly qualified Apprentice School faculty in the
first year. Apprentices then become eligible for optional academic and occupational
programs based on their performance in the first year. These programs include
Advanced Shipyard Operations, Marine Design, Production Planning, Modeling and
Simulation Analyst, Nuclear Test Technician and Cost Estimation. Criteria for selection
include academic grades, craft performance, attendance, personal interest,
and aptitude for the work.

This program provides education for shipyard workers who desire to become supervisors and managers and to those who are new to management within the industry.
