Are you currently riding a three wheeled rig, but need
some formal instruction? Have you completed the Basic
Sidecar/Trike Course and are looking to become a better
rider?
The Advanced Sidecar/Trike course is designed for someone
who has been riding a three wheeled motorcycle but is
looking to hone their braking, turning, obstacle avoidance
and accident avoidance skills. The course is 8 hours
in length and consists of both classroom and hands-on
riding instruction.
Tidewater Community College, in conjunction
with the Motorcycle Safety League of Virginia, Inc.
(MSLVI), provides sidecar and trike rigs for your training.
You are permitted to use your own three-wheeled rig
if you have one. In order to be used in our program,
the sidecar/trike rig must have a current state safety
inspection, be properly licensed and the student must
show proof of insurance. The instructor will also perform
an inspection of the lights, tires and brakes of each
student's rig prior to the rig being used during the
course. If, in the opinion of the instructor, the rig
is in an unsafe condition, the student will not be allowed
to use that rig on the course. The instructor's decision
is final.

TCC/MSLVI
will also provide helmets for your use. If you want
to use your own helmet it must be, at a minimum, DOT
approved and a 3/4 or full-faced helmet. No 1/2 (shorty)
helmets are allowed on the course. Instructors:
Instructors for the Advanced Sidecar/Trike Course are
all experienced motorcycle operators who are nationally
certified by the Evergreen Safety Council and attend
mandatory updates sponsored by the Motorcycle Safety
League of Virginia, Inc.
The course is physically demanding. Students should
be in good health and must be able to ride a bicycle.
The instructor will make the final determination if
the student will be allowed to participate in the riding
portion of the course. If, in the instructor's opinion,
a student is unable to meet the minimum physical requirements,
you will be asked to discontinue the riding portion
o the course, with no refund given. You may remain in
the class as an observer, but will not be certified
for completion. Students
must provide:
Full fingered
gloves (leather preferred)
Sturdy over-the-ankle
foot protection
Long pants
(denim is best)
Long sleeve
shirt of jacket
Rain gear
(if needed)
Lunch for
Saturday and Sunday
To be eligible
to enroll, a student must be at least 16 years of age.
Those under 18 will require written parental permission
