GMDSS - Global Maritime Distress and Safety System
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What is GMDSS?
GMDSS is a maritime communication system that is installed aboard
all commercial ships engaged in ocean service. It is a system of
maritime satellite, VHF, HF, and MF frequency communications equipment.
2. Why do I need GMDSS training?
Because ships are required to have GMDSS trained personnel on board,
it is strongly advisable that you receive training in order to keep
the utility in your Officer's License. It is also beneficial for
shore-side personnel holding a license, because it maintains the
utility of the license if or when you go to sea.
3. Who can operate GMDSS equipment?
In addition to the FCC GMDSS License, Officers must have an STCW
Certificate indicating that they have completed an GMDSS Operator's
Course approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.
4. Who offers the course?
Only a handful of companies around the country can offer the course.
Tidewater Community College now offers approved GMDSS training.
Tidewater Community College uses the latest simulation and communications
hardware to help prepare students for the equipment they will use.
They will also be able to obtain their FCC License. TCC is very
convenient for Deck Officers living on the East Coast as TCC is
close to airports, shipping, convenient accommodations, and leisure
activities.
5. How long does the course last?
The course is two weeks in length and starts on a Monday. It is
held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
6. Who should take the course?
Licensed Deck or Radio Officers wishing to obtain their GMDSS FCC
License and meet STCW Requirements.
7. How much does it cost?
For the STCW two-week course, the cost is $1,500.00 per student.
8. Who pays for the course?
Ultimately, it is the student's responsibility to pay for the course.
However, many companies may pay or reimburse employees for the expense
of technical job-related training.
9. What documentation will be issued when I successfully complete
this course?
You will be issued a completion certificate issued by TCC as an
United States Coast Guard-Approved Facility. This certificate is
mailed to the Licensing Office where your records are on file, so
you will receive your STCW certificate/endorsement from the Coast
Guard. You will also be issued a completion certificate which serves
as a temporary FCC License until you are mailed your FCC GMDSS Operator's
License.
10. Who teaches the course?
The instructors are Professional Mariners and Educators approved
by the U.S. Coast Guard. Feel free to discuss training and certification
with them by calling the Hampton Roads Maritime Training Center
at (757) 822-1315.
11. Where will the course be taught?
At TCC's Hampton Roads Maritime Training Center, 350 Granby Street
in downtown Norfolk, Virginia. Parking is available for students.
12. Is there a guarantee that a student will pass the course?
No, however, our professional instructors will work diligently to
insure that you are ready to fully operate a GMDSS system.
13. Is there a retest policy?

other opportunities to pass the exams after reviewing material.
