Shipyard Apprenticeship Programs

Apprenticeship programs can be a rewarding way to enter the maritime industry.  These programs give students skilled classroom training as well as hands-on experience working full-time at a shipyard.  Participants completing an apprenticeship program can possibly obtain a career studies certificate,associate degree and/or nationally recognized journeyman’s license. 

The following companies currently have registered apprenticeship programs through TCC.  For more information about each company and application procedures, follow the links below.

 

The BAE Systems Apprenticeship Program provides selected students the opportunity to obtain a certificate or an associate degree while learning a trade.

Participants attend Tidewater Community College  and take either college level or industrial track courses. Trade theory courses are also held at BAE Systems.

Academic courses are held after normal working hours.  The student earns a competitive wage while working 40 hours a week.

Trades we will be hiring for this year include:

  • Sheet Metal Worker
  • Carpenter
  • Dock Master
  • Electrician
  • Inside Machinist
  • Outside Machinist
  • Pipefitter
  • Rigger
  • Shipfitter
  • Welder

 

Applications for the 2008 Apprenticeship Program must be received by BAE Systems Norfolk Human Resources Office by June 2008.

EARL INDUSTRIES

  

Earl Industries provides a fast-track apprenticeship program for qualified individuals within the following trades:

  • Marine Electrician
  • Shipfitter
  • Marine Welder
  • Pipefitter
  • Sheet Metal Worker
  • Marine Painter
  • Outside and Inside Machinist

All apprentices enter into a formal agreement with Earl Industries, which includes On the Job Training (OJT),and classroom instruction outside normal working hours.

The program is very intense and covers a three year period at which time the graduating apprentice will receive state certification, academic credits, and promotion to a mid level skill within his/her chosen trade.

Selection for the apprentice program is very competitive and only the best candidates are offered appointment.
