ENVR 1005 Intro to Weatherization

Using the Department of Energy Weatherization Assistance Program curriculum, experienced instructors will teach this 32-hour program. This course provides an overview of home construction, how a house operates as a system, and elements of weatherization to save on energy use and costs. Upon completion of classroom and hands-on lab components,you will be ready to register for weatherization measures in your own home or for family and friends.

By attending this session, participants will:

  • Gain historical perspective of the Weatherization Assistance Program
  • Understand characteristics of the client base served by the program
  • Recognize that building science guides the selection of measures installed with program dollars
  • Understand the principles of cost-effectiveness and the savings-to-investment ratio
  • Learn communication guidelines for working with clients
  • Understand how energy audits guide weathrization work

ENVR 1006 Building Auditor 1 - Building Science for Energy Auditors

This Class is the first part of the energy auditor program. You will need to also complete the Building Diagnostic Approaches class in order to prepare for industry tests form BPI or RESNET. This classroom part of the energy auditor program will cover topics necessary for working in the industry and performing full scale energy audits.

ENVR 1007 Building Auditor 2 - Diagnostic Approaches for Energy Audits

This class is the second part of the energy auditor program. Although typically taken immediately following the classroom part, some students will take this class as a refresher in diagnostic procedures and equipment used in performing energy audits. This class will be conducted in a lab and/or field environment. Students will work with all equipment necessary to conduct full-scale energy audits. Diagnostic procedures will be covered to prepare students to take a BPI or HERS field tests.

Equipment covered includes:

  • Blower doors
  • Duct testers
  • Manometers
  • Thermal cameras
  • Combustion analysis equipment and other diagnostic tools

ENVR 1008 Air Sealer Installer

This course is an industry certification class deisgned for weatherization and home performance providers with experience in the construction industry. It teaches the retrofitter how to improve house efficeincy and to conserve enrgy and to increase home health, durability, safety and comfort. It addresses the house as a system and how to achieve whole house leakage control.

Topics will include:

  • Defining thermal boundary
  • Identifying boundary leakage points
  • Selecting and utilizing appropriate materials
  • Extending air barriers
  • Extending exhaust fans to the exterior
  • Weather stripping
  • Prepping attic and crawl spaces
  • Installing lose fill, blanket and/or rigid board insulation
  • Practicing "cut to fit" method
  • Air-duct, attic, and crawl space sealing and insulation
  • Understanding appropriate health and saftey measures
