Pennies With Power & Purpose - Community Service Project

Ongoing Event

Upward Bound staff and students have adopted the Haven House, a homeless shelter for single women with children, and will donate all monies collected towards touching their lives!

Update

Through the efforts of the Upward Bound and TCC-Chesapeake Family we were able to raise $563.52 for the Haven House.  On December 13, 2008 the students and staff visited the

Haven House to present the monetary donation along with additional Christmas gifts to residents of the house. For the 2009-2010 school year, the staff and students of Upward Bound will support the Southeastern VA Food Bank.
To support this effort please feel free to share your Pennies with the Upward Bound Program, where small change makes a big change in the lives of others.

What is Upward Bound?
Funded by a grant from the
U.S. Department of Education

Upward Bound is a grant sponsored through the U. S. Department of Education. It provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in pre-college performance and ultimately in higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelors degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

We service the following Chesapeake Public High Schools:

Oscar Smith High School

Indian River High School

Deep Creek High School

The program consists of:

  • The nine-month Academic Year Academy which provides participants with personal and academic counseling, tutorial assistance, supplemental instruction, and cultural and social enrichment experiences.
  • The Summer Institute at the Chesapeake Campus which provides participants with the opportunity to experience campus life while attending classes. The highlight of the summer institute is a major cultural and educational field trip.
  • The Summer Bridge component which allows recent program graduates planning to attend college in the fall semester immediately following graduation the opportunity to take one to two transferable college courses at TCC paid for by the program.

You are eligible if.......

  • Neither of your parents holds a four-year degree
  • Your family's income meets federal guidelines
  • You are in at least grade 9, but you have not completed the 10th grade
  • You have the academic motivation and potential to succeed in education beyond high school
  • Your school is located within the Chesapeake school division
