Susan M. James
Susan M. James is Special Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff. She manages the duties in the office of the president and supervises two support staff, providing direct oversight and leadership in the daily execution of their responsibilities. As staff liaison to the College Board, James maintains ongoing communication between the presidentís office and board members, schedules and manages board meetings and oversees board archives. For nearly two years, James coordinated the logistics and managed the dues and invoices for the 23 institutions that comprise the Council of Presidents for the Virginia Community College System.
James enlisted in the Navy in April 1984 and retired in April 2008 as a Senior Chief Yeoman with 24 years of distinguished service. Her personal and professional travels include visits to Canada, Spain, Greece, Italy, France, Turkey, Israel, Croatia, Switzerland, Germany, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Belize, Cuba, St. Thomas, Cayman Islands, Bahamas and Mexico.
Through the Womenís Center, James mentored a student in fall 2010. She currently serves on the career services team and is a founding member of the TCC Alumni Association, Inc. Board of Directors. James also coached a recreational girls volleyball team for more than four years and dedicated numerous hours refurbishing a shelter for homeless women and children in Virginia Beach.
James holds a masterís degree of public administration from Troy University and a bachelorís in human resources from St. Leo University. James graduated from TCC in 1992 with an associate in applied science in office systems technology.
James is a native of Kingston, Jamaica. She and husband Lancelot have two daughters, Christine and Cheyanne.
