Technology for Fall 2020 Remote Learning
This page was last modified on July 30, 2020 at 04:29 pm. This page will keep the TCC community informed of the college’s actions and any operating schedule changes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
If you need a computer or internet access for Fall 2020, here are some resources.
Because your health and safety are TCC’s top priority, the college is emphasizing online instruction for Fall 2020 using technologies like Canvas and Zoom. If you need help accessing technology — whether it’s a computer or an internet connection — we are here to help.
If you have any questions or need help with technology, contact TCC’s Help Desk at 757-822-2457 or email@example.com.
To take an online class you will need:
- Desktop or laptop computer with an up-to-date browser
- An audio source with microphone, which could be earphones, a headset or phone
- A reliable internet connection
A webcam is recommended but not required.
NOTE: Chromebooks and other mobile devices, such as iPads, are not recommended as a replacement for a computer as they may not be compatible with all tools used in courses.
NOTE: The above applies to most classes. Some classes may have additional requirements, such as downloading and installing student versions of software. Students should check with the instructor or course notes for additional requirements.
IF YOU NEED A COMPUTER
You can use your financial aid to purchase a laptop at Barnes & Noble’s TCC bookstores. Student financial aid purchases can be made two to three weeks before the start of the term. Some other restrictions apply. Contact the bookstore for details: 757-640-5985.
TCC’s Computers for Student Success is working to distribute computers to students who need them for just a small fee. For information and application process, visit the club’s website. For information, call 757-512-5807 or email TCCCompClub@gmail.com. Apply now!
IF YOU NEED INTERNET ACCESS
TCC will open these computer labs starting August 24. Physical distancing requirements and enhanced cleaning will be maintained, and you will need to wear a face covering. See what TCC is doing to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

ALL ABOUT CANVAS
Canvas is the application TCC uses to deliver instruction over the internet. Your instructors can use Canvas to provide course materials, assign course activities, and engage in communication with you and your fellow students. All TCC classes will have a corresponding Canvas course. Courses will be available in Canvas on the first day of class.
To access Canvas, log into myTCC and then select the Canvas button. If you have trouble signing in to myTCC or don’t see your course in Canvas, call the Info Center at 757-822-1122.
All About Zoom
Zoom is a web conferencing tool available to all TCC faculty and students. Instructors use Zoom to conduct classes synchronously, meaning students sign in to a class on a certain day at a certain time. Instructors can also hold virtual office hours and provide individual or group tutoring sessions.
As a TCC student, you already have a Zoom account connected to your TCC student email. To access Zoom, log into myTCC and then select the Zoom button. If you get stuck, call the Info Center at 757-822-1122. Information about Zoom is included in the “Important Information for Students (Fall 2020)” module that is located every Canvas course.
To use Zoom, you will need a webcam for video and audio, which can be a speaker, earphones or headset. You can also download and use the Zoom app on your phone or tablet.
