Master the art and science of cooking and baking by becoming a student in Tidewater Community College’s culinary arts program. Learn from expert faculty chefs working in commercial kitchens all around Hampton Roads. You can earn a TCC degree for less than the cost of one semester at some for-profit or four-year culinary schools.

Hone your culinary skills while learning the business of food service operations, nutrition and food safety. Study classical cooking including knife cuts, soups, stocks and sauces, as well as basic baking techniques.

TCC’s Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts is accredited by The American Culinary Federation (ACF). TCC culinary graduates who maintain a student membership in the ACF are automatically awarded the first industry-level certification, which is Certified Culinarian.

What does this program cost?

TCC’s Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts consists of 4 semesters of full-time study, with classes held mainly on the Norfolk Campus.

If your schedule doesn't permit full-time attendance, you may also take classes part-time.

Estimated Program Cost*:
64 credits x $185.35 per credit = $11,862.40 (not including textbooks and supplies)
*Based on Fall 2018 in-state tuition. Your actual cost may differ.

Additional costs include:

  • Two chef coats with embroidered name (about $35 each)
  • Chef pants (about $20)
  • Chef hat (toque) (about $5)
  • Non-skid black shoes (between $40 and $90)
  • A starter kit of knives is required. The cost is about $300.

Chef wear and knives can be purchased with financial aid through Barnes & Noble at TCC. 

Where can you go?

Graduates are prepared for entry or continued employment in food service operations. Work as an assistant kitchen manager, caterer, banquet chef, chef tournant, sous chef and, ultimately, executive chef. TCC students can continue on to bachelor’s degrees using the college’s transfer agreement with Norfolk State University
