English as a Second Language

Ten Best Reasons to Study ESL at TCC

  1. The tuition at the community college is lower than at local universities that offer ESL.

  2. Financial aid is available for ESL students who qualify.

  3. After taking a placement test, students are placed into classes according to their abilities in different skill areas. For example, if your reading skills are strong, but your grammar skills are weak, you will be placed into a lower level grammar class and a higher level reading class.

  4. Diagnostic testing is completed on the first day of class each semester to be sure you are placed at the right level. If your score on a diagnostic test shows you should be at a higher level, you will be moved to the appropriate class level.

  5. TOEFL scores of students who have completed the ESL program at TCC average between 550 and 630.

  6. The ESL Tutoring Lab is staffed with ESL faculty and provides FREE tutoring on a walk-in basis.

  7. TCC classes are small; each class averages from 8 to 18 students.

  8. Most ESL faculty use Blackboard, a teaching software which allows students to access assignments, grades, and class discussions from home.

  9. ESL students have access to all services on the campus, such as the library, counseling, tutoring, student employment services, etc.

  10. ESL students at TCC come from all over the world. One class of students can represent 10 or more different countries! You will make new friends as you practice your English together.
