If you are a registered radiographer, Tidewater Community College’s advanced certification in Mammography could provide new career opportunities for you.
Mammography is specialized medical imaging that uses low-dose x-rays to see inside the breasts. Mammography exams, called mammograms, help doctors diagnose breast diseases.
Students complete the certification through 3, 1-credit online classes, and a 2-credit clinical component:
Anatomy and Positioning of the Breast (RAD 233)
Presents the risk factors for breast disease, anatomy and physiology of the breast and discusses the various pathologies identified through mammography. Includes routine and special projections of the breast.
Breast Imaging/Instrumentation (RAD 234)
Discusses the dedicated radiography equipment necessary for breast imaging. Includes proper technical factors, radiation protection techniques, and proper accessory equipment.
Quality Assurance in Mammography (RAD 235)
Discusses the components of quality assurance in mammography and the accreditation programs developed to ensure quality in breast imaging facilities.
On-Site Training (RAD 196)
Specializes in career orientation and training program without pay in selected businesses and industry, supervised and coordinated by the college. May be repeated for credit.
Laboratory 10 hours per week.

- You must be an ARRT-registered Technologist, or a TCC senior radiography student in good standing
- You must obtain permission from an FDA approved mammography facility to perform a clinical rotation
TCC’s advanced certification in Mammography consists of 3 1-credit courses, which are offered online.

Additional costs include criminal background check, drug screen, and current immunizations. May include parking at some clinical facilities, and dosimetry fees.
After earning your advanced certification in Mammography, you can work in multiple health care settings, including comprehensive hospitals and imaging centers.
