TCC’s Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology prepares you to begin a career as a technician in the automotive repair field or to updated your training if you’re already working in the field. By completing this degree, you give yourself an advantage in the job market over those without formal training.

All automotive classes are held in the Regional Automotive Center, a 30,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in Chesapeake, offering students affordable and convenient training at the forefront of industry trends and standards.

TCC’s automotive degree curriculum is based on the Master Automotive Service Technology standards set forth by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF).

Certify your skills

You will be ready to take national ASE certification exams in the nine areas offered, in addition to the A/C Refrigerant Recovery License and Virginia State Inspection License.

Your studies will include these 9 ASE areas:

  • engine repair
  • automotive transmissions/transaxles
  • manual drive train and axles
  • suspension and steering
  • brakes
  • electrical/electronic systems
  • heating and air conditioning
  • engine performance
  • auto maintenance and light repair

What does this program cost?

You can complete a 2-year associate degree for less than the cost of 1 year at a 4-year college or university.

TCC’s Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology consists of 4 semesters of full-time study, with classes held mainly at the Regional Automotive Center in Chesapeake.

If your schedule doesn't permit full-time attendance, you may also take classes part-time.

Estimated Program Cost*:
68 credits x $185.35 per credit = $12,603.80 (not including textbooks and supplies)
*Based on Fall 2018 in-state tuition. Your actual cost may differ.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own personal protection equipment, including steel-toed boots, safety glasses and long pants. Students must also obtain a TCC uniform shirt. If you are already working in the automotive repair field, you may wear the uniform from your place of business.

Where can you go?

Graduates of this program can go to work at automotive dealerships, independent repair facilities, fleet repair companies, and municipalities where you’ll stand head and shoulders above the average entry-level worker.

You may also pursue a bachelor’s degree in automotive technology at a four-year institution.
