Tidewater Community College offers the only accredited health information management program in South Hampton Roads. Health information managers are skilled in translating medical language into the codes needed for preservation and analysis of data, insurance reimbursement, and health care decisions. They ensure a patient’s health information and records are complete, accurate, and protected. Flexible day and evening classes are available for busy students.

The HIM Program can be completed with flexible day and evening hours in a hybrid format.
There are no prerequisites for the HIM Program. If you have already taken some of the classes listed in the first Semester, you may take HIM 110 and HIM 226 in the first semester to increase your credit load.

Associate of Applied Science - Health Information Management
This curriculum builds your health information management expertise through hands-on training, a clinical internship, and lectures in TCC’s state-of-the-art training facility. Course work includes human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, human pathology, and pharmacology. An 80-hour clinical internship and a 120-hour VLab simulated experience prepare you for the workplace. Students are qualified to sit for the AHIMA Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT®) certification exam. Only graduates of CAHIIM-accredited programs may take this exam.
The Health Information Management program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education.
The College’s accreditation for Associate degree in Health Information Management has been reaffirmed through 2029. Admission to the health information management program requires a separate application in addition to general admission to the college.
To qualify for this program, you will need to complete and submit the application by May 15th for fall admission.

It is also strongly recommended that you attend an information session on health information management, which is held the third Thursday of each month at 1 p.m. (except in December) at the Regional Health Professions Center on the Virginia Beach Campus.
Admission to the college does not guarantee admission to the health information management program.

Individuals in the Health Information Management program may elect to pursue professional certification following completion of the associate degree. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) offers an examination toward the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), available to graduates of the HIM program.
Students are qualified to sit for the AHIMA Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT®) certification exam. Only graduates of CAHIIM-accredited programs may take this exam.
The following are the pass rates, employment satisfaction, and retention rates as reported to the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) for the August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2022 period.
