Equal parts lecture and hands-on learning, Tidewater Community College’s HVAC/R program trains students for a gamut of job opportunities in a field that has the highest demand for new workers—in Virginia and across the nation. The demand is enormous, and every year, it gets bigger. Learn the basic science of HVAC/R in state-of-the-art laboratories with equipment that ranges from small residential to light commercial. You can also specialize in one of three areas: commercial, residential, or supervision and management. You’ll also be prepared to obtain the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) industry certification.

Associate of Applied Science - Specialization in Commercial

The focus of this program is to train students to service, repair, and troubleshoot commercial refrigeration systems, which include walk-in coolers and freezers, reach-ins, and ice machines. The course work will also focus on commercial air-conditioning systems.

Students in this program receive hands-on, practical experience in troubleshooting and repairing residential refrigeration, air conditioning and heating equipment. Graduate with the skills necessary for troubleshooting complex systems, installing and repairing components, and providing efficiency solutions.

Associate of Applied Science - Specialization in Supervision & Management

Prepare to repair, maintain, and service HVAC systems by supervising and assigning work according to building codes and standards. You'll train to conduct routine inspections and supervise repairs and/or maintenance to HVAC and refrigeration equipment.

Ready yourself for in-demand HVAC/R technician jobs working on residential or commercial air conditioning systems, or for positions as a sales representative or a control services technician. You’ll study the fundamentals of air conditioning and refrigeration systems in addition to duct construction and maintenance, hydronics, and applied technical mathematics.
