Blackboard Support & Tutorials

These tutorials will help you perform the most common tasks in Blackboard, such as accessing your courses, viewing course syllabi, and submitting assignments.

Blackboard notifications

Blackboard may undergo regular maintenance between midnight and 4 a.m. on Thursdays. We appreciate your cooperation and patience during service interruptions.

Additional dates and times for Blackboard unavailability and other Blackboard issues will be listed on the myTCC login page.

Login to Blackboard

Blackboard is Tidewater Community College’s learning management system (LMS). Blackboard enables your instructors to provide you with course materials to compliment the traditional face-to-face teaching environment, as well as hybrid and online course work.

There are two ways to login to Blackboard Learn.
 

Login to Blackboard Learn using myTCC:

Step 1: On the TCC home page, click on the myTCC button.

Step 2: On the myTCC home page, enter your myTCC username and password. When finished, click Sign In.

To lookup your myTCC username: 

  • Click on “Forgot Username” under the Sign In button and follow the instructions provided.


To set/recover your myTCC password: 

  • To set your account password for the first time, or to reset a forgotten password, click on “Forgot Password” underneath the Sign In button and follow the instructions provided.
     

Step 3: Click Blackboard Learn.
 

Login to Blackboard Learn using a direct link:

Step 1: In your web browser, type https://learn.vccs.edu ​directly into the address field.

Step 2: On the page that appears, enter your myTCC username and password.​ When finished, click Login.

Locate & Enter a Blackboard Course

Follow these instructions to locate and enter a Blackboard course:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: On the TCC Blackboard landing page, locate the My Blackboard Courses module.

Step 3: Click on a course title to enter the course.

Access the Global Navigation Menu

The Blackboard Global Navigation menu is a quick and easy way to access your courses and other Blackboard tools.

Follow these instructions to access the Global Navigation menu in Blackboard:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: Click the area where your name appears in the upper right corner of Blackboard. The dropdown menu will appear.

Identify Course Menu

The Blackboard Course Menu gives you access to a course’s content.

Follow these instructions to locate the Course Menu in your Blackboard course.

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: Enter your Blackboard course.

Step 3: The course menu will be the panel located on the left side of your course.

Access a Course Menu on a Mobile Device

The Course Menu makes up the left side of the Blackboard Learn course screen. The left side can be collapsed and expanded as desired. If you enter your class and no longer see the menu on the left, that area has been collapsed.

Follow these steps to expand (show) the course menu on a mobile device:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard on your mobile device.

Step 2: Enter your Blackboard course.

Step 3: In your course, click on the arrow located on the left side of the screen.

The menu should now appear.

Access Announcements

The Announcements area in Blackboard Learn is where your instructors post information about courses, such as upcoming tests, assignment due dates, special instructions, and course content postings. It is very important that you keep up with class announcements.

Announcements can be viewed on the TCC Blackboard landing page and on the Announcements page of your TCC course.

To view an announcement on the TCC Blackboard landing page:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: On the TCC Blackboard landing page, locate the module titled My Announcements.

Step 3: Click on the “more announcements” link in the lower right hand corner of the box to view more announcements.


To view an announcement in the Announcements page of your course:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: Enter your Blackboard course.

Step 3: Click Announcements on the course menu.

Access Course Syllabus

A syllabus is a document that your instructor writes and distributes to provide you with an overview of the college course, college policies, course materials, and learning expectations.

Follow these steps to access the syllabus in your Blackboard course:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: Enter your Blackboard course.

Step 3: On the course menu, click Course Information.

Step 4: On the Course Information page, select Syllabus, Schedules, and Course Policies.

Step 5: On the Syllabus, Schedules, and Course Policies page, click on the Syllabus file name to open the document.

Access My Grades

The My Grades page shows the status of gradable items, such as tests, assignments, journal and blog entries, and discussion posts.

There are three ways to access your grades in Blackboard.

To access your grades in the My Grades section of your course:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: Enter your Blackboard Course.

Step 3: On the course menu, click My Grades.


To access your grades in the Tools section of your course:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: Enter your Blackboard Course.

Step 3: On the course menu, click Tools and Features.

Step 4: On the Tools and Features page, click My Grades.


To access your grades from the Global Navigation Menu:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: In the page header, click the arrow next to your name to access the menu.

Step 3: Click the My Grades icon (the icon that resembles a form with a check mark and plus sign).

Access Blackboard Discussions

The discussion board is a tool for sharing thoughts and ideas about class materials. You can use the discussion board to meet with your peers for collaboration and social interaction, pose questions about homework exercises, readings, and course content, and demonstrate the understanding or application of course material.

Follow these instructions to access the Discussions area in your Blackboard course:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: Enter your Blackboard course.

Step 3: On the course menu, click Discussions.

Step 4: The main Discussion Board page appears with a list of available discussion forums.

Create a Discussion Thread

Discussion Board Forums are made up of individual discussion threads that are organized around a particular subject. Forums are created by instructors and students create the discussion threads.

Follow these instructions to create a discussion thread:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: Enter your Blackboard course.

Step 3: On the course menu, click Discussions

Step 4: On the main Discussion Board page, click on the name of the discussion forum you wish to enter.

Step 5: Click Create Thread.

Step 6: Type a name for your Thread.

Step 7: Type a message.

Step 8: Click Browse My Computer to attach a file. (Optional)

Step 9: Click Submit.

Reply to Discussion Posts

In the discussion board, replies build on one another to construct a conversation.

Follow these instructions to reply to a discussion post:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: Enter your Blackboard course.

Step 3: On the course menu, click Discussions.

Step 4: On the main Discussion Board page, click on the name of the discussion forum you wish to enter.

Step 5: Select a Thread.

Step 6: Click Reply.

Step 7: If needed, edit the Subject.

Step 8: Type a message.

Step 9: Click Submit.

Send Email in Blackboard

Blackboard Email allows you to send email messages without having to login to a separate email client.

Follow these instructions to send email directly from a Blackboard course to your instructor:

Step 1: Login to Blackboard.

Step 2: Enter your Blackboard course.

Step 3: On the course menu, click Tools and Features.

Step 4: On the Tools and Features page, select Send Email.

Step 5: On the Send Email page, select All Instructor Users.

Step 6: Type your Subject and Message.

Step 7: Click Attach a File to browse for files from your computer. (Optional)

Step 8: Click Submit.

Submit an Assignment

There are three basic types of written assignments: writing a submission, attaching a file, and submission using SafeAssign, our plagiarism checking site.

Follow these instructions to submit an assignment:

Submit an assignment (writing)

Step 1: Select the assignment in Blackboard.

Step 2: On the Upload Assignment screen, click Write Submission.

Step 3: Type your response in the Text Submission box.

Step 4: Click Submit.
 

Submit an assignment (attach a file)

Step 1: Locate the assignment in Blackboard.

Step 2: Click Browse My Computer.

Step 3: Select a file to attach.

Note: When naming the file, follow the instructions provided by your instructor (if any)

Step 4: Click Submit.
 

Submit an assignment (using SafeAssign)

Step 1: Locate the assignment in Blackboard.

Step 2: Read the Institution Release Statement.

Step 3: Click Browse My Computer.

Step 4: Select a file to attach.

Note: When naming the file, follow the instructions provided by your instructor (if any)

Step 5: Under Assignment Submission, place a check in the checkbox next to the statement “I agree to submit my paper(s) to the Global Reference Database”

Step 6: Click Submit.
