DoD Restoring Tuition Assistance for All Services

 

Tuition assistance programs are to be restored quickly with renewed funding from Congress, Defense Department officials said. The current programs provide about $250 per credit hour with a ceiling of $4,500 annually for servicemembers using thier off duty time to pursue vocational courses or classes toward an associate, bachelor, masters or doctoral degree.

I am pleased to introduce a new online tuition payment system which allows students to view their bills, designate an authorized payer such as a parent or guardian, and make payments online using Nelnet’s QuikPAY® system.  The VCCS contracted with Nelnet to integrate this payment process with our SIS.

Retirees and Vets Allowed to Salute Flag

 

The National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 allows un-uniformed service members, military retirees, and veterans to render a hand salute during the hositing, lowering, or passing of the U.S. flag. Later the Defense Authorization Act of 2009 further authorized hand-salutes during the national anthem by veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel.

On December 15, 2011, the Department of Defense (DoD) granted a 90-day extension, from December 30, 2011, to March 30, 2012, for institutions to sign the DoD Tuition Assistance Program Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA)

After a comprehensive review, the Department of Defense (DoD) rolled out a newly restructured military spouse career advancement account (MyCAA) to begin on October 25, 2010 at 8:00 AM EDT.  The changes come in an effort to make the program more viable and sustainable, due to the inability of the DoD to fund the unexpected growth and cost of the project.
