The 41st Annual Student Art Show: Ceramics, Drawing, Glass, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography, was held in the galleries of Tidewater Community College’s Visual Arts Center (VAC), March 25 through April 22, 2012. Featuring over 200 works by more than 100 students, works were created for art classes since last May, and represented program courses in Studio Arts, Photography, Graphic Design, Pottery and Glassblowing.
Gayle Paul, Curator, Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center, Portsmouth, Virginia, was this year’s judge. The Awards Presentation took place Saturday, March 31, 2012, 11 a.m., at the Commodore Theatre, 421 High Street, Portsmouth. During the event, Paul presented over $4,900 in awards in recognition of artistic excellence. The Opening Reception followed the presentation of awards at noon at the VAC.
Complementary programming for the exhibition included illustrated lectures by a Visiting Artist and a Visiting Art Historian. On Tuesday, April 3, Bob Paris, Associate Professor of Kinetic Imaging, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia presented "The Strategies and Strange Transmissions of The Cluster Project." On Wednesday, April 11, Amy Brandt, Ph.D., McKinnon Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia, presented "30 Americans in Context." Both programs began at 12:30 p.m. at the VAC in rooms 208/209.
