TCC is making important changes to its math courses that affect new and current students. These changes will be implemented in the Fall 2018 semester. The changes are being made at all VCCS schools to make transferring to Virginia’s public colleges and universities seamless and consistent across all schools.
The changes in a nutshell
- Every math course at TCC (except MTE 6 to 9) will have a new number or course equivalency starting with the Fall 2018 term, and a few math courses will no longer be offered.
- Courses that previously applied to your current degree program will continue to apply. If you have already completed a specific math course that fits your current degree program, you do not need to take the new course.
- All math courses that require MTH 152 (or higher) as a prerequisite will now require you to earn a grade of “C” or better in the prerequisite course.
Specific course changes

- Additionally, two new Math Learning Support courses (MCR 4 – learning support for MTH 154 – Quantitative Reasoning, and MCR 6 – learning support for MTH 161 – PreCalculus I) will be offered. These optional courses will allow students to take select college-level math classes even though they have not fully met the prerequisites for the class, potentially saving time and money.
To be eligible, students must have a high school GPA between 2.7 to 2.9 and have taken specific high school math courses within the last 5 years. Students may also take the Virginia Math Placement Test to be eligible. Contact a TCC Academic Advisor or Counselor for additional details.
