Financial Aid Course Audit

Make the most of your financial aid

Financial aid is intended to help you complete your degree or certificate. Make the best use of your financial aid by selecting courses that count toward your declared program of study.

Under federal regulations, students can receive financial aid only for courses that apply toward their declared degree or certificate program.

While this is not a new rule, TCC has adopted the Financial Aid Course Audit (FACA), a new system that allows us to inform you shortly after you register whether any of your course selections are ineligible for financial aid.

We hope that providing you with this information will help you to better plan your academic career, select courses that apply to your program, and complete your degree or certificate in record time!

What you should do

  • Be proactive. Discuss your academic and career goals with your advisor and choose a program that aligns with your goals.
  • Log on to myTCC, go to your Student Center and click on My Academics to confirm you are enrolled in the program you have identified.
  • Register for courses that apply to your program of study in order to maximize your financial aid award and achieve your goals sooner.

FAQs

How do I know if my courses are eligible for financial aid?

The Financial Aid Course Audit (FACA) uses the advisement report to identify courses required for your program. Shortly after you register (typically by the following day), you can determine whether any of your course selections are ineligible for aid by following these steps:

  • Log on to myTCC and click on VCCS SIS Student Information System
  • From Self-Service menu, click on Student Center
  • Under Finances, click on View Financial Aid
  • Click on the current aid year and scroll to the correct term
  • Click on View Course Eligibility

You will see each course identified as eligible or ineligible for financial aid.

  • Eligible courses will be marked with a green check.
  • Ineligible courses will be marked with a red “x.”
  • Courses that have not yet been evaluated will have a question mark.

Additionally, you will receive messages in your Student Center that identify the courses that do not apply to your program of study and therefore aren’t eligible for financial aid.

How do I view my advisement report?

Follow these steps to view your advisement report:

  • Log on to myTCC and click on VCCS SIS Student Information System
  • From Self-Service menu, click on Student Center
  • Under Academics, click on My Academics
  • Click on View My Advisement Report
What do I do if my course is not eligible for financial aid?

You can drop the ineligible course or you can continue taking it.

If you take a course that doesn’t count toward completion of your program, you will be responsible for paying the tuition, fees, books and expenses for any ineligible course.

You must pay tuition by the payment deadline to avoid having the course dropped. Visit one of the campus business offices for assistance.

Can I use my financial aid to cover books for ineligible courses?

No. Financial aid is intended to cover tuition/fees, books, and supplies only for courses that apply to your program.

Are developmental courses eligible for financial aid?

Developmental courses up to the maximum of 30 credit hours will be counted as eligible for financial aid in the FACA process.

I am repeating a class. Will it be eligible for financial aid?

If you have already earned a passing grade for the course, financial aid will only pay for one more attempt. For example: if you earned a D on your first attempt and an F on your second attempt, you are responsible for paying all tuition, fees, and expenses on your third attempt.

Why isn’t my course eligible for financial aid?

Check the program listed on your degree audit report to see if you are enrolled in the correct program. If the wrong program is listed on your report, contact your advisor/counselor or submit the online curriculum change request form.

If you feel the course is marked is ineligible by mistake, contact your advisor/counselor for a detailed look at your record and further assistance.

What do I do if I need to change my program?

You can submit the online curriculum change request form to change your program. We also suggest you contact your advisor/counselor to discuss your new program, your academic goals, and how to achieve them.

If you are a military-related student using benefits, please visit any of TCC's Center for Military and Veterans Education VA offices for assistance before making any changes.

What do I do if my program is correct, but my catalog year is wrong?

If you are enrolled in the correct program, but simply need to change your catalog year, submit the online curriculum change form.

You are eligible to select any catalog year after you have been admitted to TCC, as long as it is not more than 6 years old (including the year in which you plan to graduate). Contact your advisor/counselor if you need additional assistance.

I am substituting a course in my program. Is it eligible for financial aid?

You may be allowed to use a pre-approved substitute course to meet your program requirements, and be covered by financial aid.

You must have the substitution approved and processed before you register for the substitute course for it to be eligible for financial aid.

Meet with your advisor/counselor for assistance with obtaining a course substitution.
