Barnes & Noble at TCC honored with 2016 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy

Barnes & Noble at Tidewater Community College has earned the 2016 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy.
The college’s bookstore partner was nominated by TCC for the award, which was given April 19 at a luncheon ceremony at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond.
Hosted by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education, the 11th annual award event honors leading philanthropists from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges as well as the statewide foundation.
This year’s class of distinguished philanthropy leaders has contributed a combined total of more than $11 million dollars to Virginia’s Community Colleges.
Barnes & Noble operates bookstores on TCC’s Virginia Beach Campus and on the Norfolk Campus in MacArthur Center. It also has distribution centers on the Chesapeake and Portsmouth campuses.
Each year, Barnes & Noble at TCC provides more than $25,000 distributed to more than 60 students. Since 2007, Barnes & Noble at TCC has contributed over $580,000, making a TCC education even more affordable.
Scholarships are awarded through the TCC Educational Foundation, the college’s fundraising and philanthropic division.

Doug Bunk, general manager of Barnes & Noble at TCC, said: “The affordability and flexibility of a community college education is essential to students, particularly those non-traditional students who also hold down jobs and have many responsibilities.
“Our contribution towards this effort each year helps solidify Barnes & Noble at TCC’s commitment to affordability and access to the quality education provided by TCC.”
Luncheon keynote speaker Mike Petters, VFCCE board member and president and CEO of Huntington Ingalls Industries in Newport News, said donors play a critical role in Virginia’s workforce development efforts, in addition to helping community college students realize their dreams of continuing their education.
“By supporting the foundation, you support access, affordability, and student success at every one of Virginia’s Community Colleges across the state from Big Stone Gap in southwestern Virginia to Melfa on the Eastern Shore – and 21 community colleges in between,” he said.
