At TCC, the month includes an assortment of free, virtual activities throughout February.

Black History Month keynote presentation with Dr. Gina Paige

Tidewater Community College celebrates Black History Month 2022 with a virtual keynote address by Gina Paige on Feb. 23, 2022 at 6:30 p.m.

Paige is president and co-founder of African Ancestry, Inc., a service that helps people track their heritage to a specific region and people group. African Ancestry is the world leader in tracing maternal and paternal lineages of African descent helping more than 750,000 people re-connect with the roots of their family tree.

The event is Sponsored by the TCC’s Virtual Student Center; the Business, Computer Science & IT Pathway; and the Student Resource and Empowerment Center.

Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Program

Each year, Tidewater Community College honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during Black History Month with a distinguished service award to a TCC faculty or staff member, and provides a scholarship to a TCC student.

Recipients of the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship and the College Distinguished Service Award will be recognized at a virtual event in February as part of the TCC Black History Month keynote address and program.

William E. Harrell has been president and CEO of Hampton Roads Transit since April 2012. Harrell has led HRT on a mission to connect Hampton Roads with transportation solutions that are reliable, safe, efficient, and sustainable, in keeping with the agency’s vision of reshaping itself into a progressive mobility agency that promotes prosperity across Hampton Roads through collaboration and teamwork.

MLK Scholarship Program

The MLK Scholarship Program recognizes a student who best exemplifies the teachings and example of Dr. King; advocates a nonviolent approach to solving society’s problems; fosters positive race relations in our community; strives to remove the social, political, and economic barriers of inequality; and possesses a realistic optimism, based on faith, for a better future for all Americans.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. College Distinguished Service Award

TCC each year marks the anniversary of the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., by presenting an award to a member of the TCC family who best exemplifies the teachings and example of Dr. King. Any individual employed by TCC is eligible to be nominated, and any TCC faculty or staff member may submit a nomination.
