Community activist Lateefah Simon to keynote TCC’s Women’s History Month

Tidewater Community College celebrates Women’s History Month with a keynote speech by a nationally recognized advocate for social justice, a career speaker series and a panel discussion.

All events are free and open to the public.

Lateefah Simon will deliver an address on March 30 at 12:30 p.m. in the Virginia Beach Campus Student Center, room K-320.

Simon, president of the Akonadi Foundation, is dedicated to advancing opportunities for communities of color and low-income communities in California’s Bay Area. The foundation seeks to eliminate structural racism, focusing on Oakland, Calif.

Simon was named “California Woman of the Year” by the California State Assembly and has been recognized by the Ford Foundation, the National Organization for Women, Lifetime Television and “O” Magazine. In 2016, The Chronicle of Philanthropy selected her for its “40 Under 40” list.

In addition, former WAVY-TV newscaster Cheryl Tan will host a one-hour career speaker series on March 23 at 12:30 p.m. on the Norfolk Campus in the Martin Building, room 2610. Tan, who started her own video marketing and media strategy company, will speak about her experience as a career switcher.

TCC’s Women’s Center will also host a panel discussion titled “Writing Women Back into History” on March 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Norfolk Campus Student Center, fifth floor.
