Hands-on CPR class keeps students up to date on latest techniques

Behind-the-scenes in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (HLT 105).

Inside the classroom: Learn life-saving skills in this one-credit class that combines American Heart Association videos with hands-on techniques to certify students in CPR and AED (use of an automated external defibrillator). Students perform chest compressions on adult, child and infant manikins, practicing solo and in pairs of two. Students also learn how to save an infant from choking and complete a written test to gain certification by the end of the class.

Student voice: “I learned the new techniques in this class. I took CPR 10 years ago, but I feel more confident now.” – Gayatri Brooks, Tidewater Community College pre-nursing student

Why this class sizzles: “You actually get aerobic exercise learning CPR,” said instructor Jerry Sourbeer, an EMT in Virginia Beach who has taught at TCC since 2004. “But the big thing is, this is a class about saving lives.”
