Helena Krohn, long-time TCC faculty member, dies

Helena M. Krohn, a member of the Tidewater Community College faculty for 42 years until her retirement last year, died Dec. 10 at the age of 69.

She was awarded emeritus status by the College Board earlier this year. Even after she retired, she returned to TCC to teach part time.

Ms. Krohn joined the faculty in 1972 as a history professor in the Humanities and Social Sciences Department. She served as chair of the history department on the Norfolk Campus for 10 years.

She received several recognitions for her teaching: TCC’s Outstanding Professor of the Year Award in 2004; the George B. Pass Distinguished Service Award; and a nomination for the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia Teacher of the Year Award.

Ms. Krohn served as chair of the Faculty Senate at the Norfolk Campus, where she initiated three programs to support academic excellence: The Thomas Moss Scholars Program, the Faculty Forum and the Moss Campus Center for Innovative Teaching. She worked to secure grants from the Virginia Humanities Foundation, the United States Bicentennial Commission and the Virginia Community College Association.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Krohn; her daughter, Lee Krohn Felty, and husband Ian; and granddaughter, Lily Mast Felty. She is also survived by her brother, Richard Mast, and wife Sharon; nephew Richard Mast Jr.; nieces Sarah and Kaitie Mast; and cousins Carrie Mast, Bonnie Odell, Maury Davis and Brooklyn Edwards.

A memorial service will be held Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. at Ebenezer Methodist Church, 99 McCurdy Lane, Rockbridge Baths, Va. A reception will immediately follow at her home, which is next to the church.

At the request of the family, flowers may be sent to 140 Meadow Lane, Rockbridge Baths, VA 24473. Additionally, donations may be made in her name to the Wounded Warrior Project or Union Mission in Norfolk.
