Learn about drones from A-Z at TCC one-day class

Calling all drone enthusiasts! Tidewater Community College’s Center for Workforce Solutions will offer drone hobbyist courses for all who want to learn how to get the most from their drone equipment.

The one-day course will cover topics that include aviation fundamentals, FAA regulations, safety requirements and insurance necessary for drone owners.

Classes will be offered from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the following dates and locations:

  • Virginia Beach Campus (Science Building JA 10): Saturday, June 4
  • Chesapeake Campus (Academic Building, Room 4101): Saturday, July 9
  • Portsmouth Campus (Building B, Room 228): Saturday, Aug. 6

Retired Navy Capt. John Fristachi, one of the founding partners of the Virginia Beach company Airsight Global, is the instructor for all of the classes.

The former F-14 pilot has nearly 35 years of mishap-free aviation experience in more than 30 aircraft types and commanded the Navy’s largest jet training squadron.

“The class is going to be fun because we’re going to make it so,” said Fristachi, who has the course set up in 10 different modules.

“We’ll go from the basic fundamentals in aviation to applied skill sets and training to how you might turn your hobby into a career.”

Fristachi encourages anyone who has an interest to enroll in the class; having your own drone is not required.

However, drone owners will be encouraged to share their stories and issues that will be integrated into the classroom experience.

The class costs $165. For information and to register, visit www.tccworkforce.org or call Emily Richardson at 757-822-1402.
