Siblings perform and study together

Seven brothers and sisters comprise The Hunts, an indie folk band from Chesapeake with Tidewater Community College roots. The group’s latest release, “We Were Young,” is the first in a six-record deal with Cherrytree Records, a division of Interscope Records.

The toe-tapping, strings-playing sibling squad has been performing for 10 years, starting in hospitals, nursing homes, festivals and Busch Gardens. They now tour around the world.

The family group began performing with mom, Sandy, and dad, Clint, but the siblings perform mostly solo now, writing and recording original works. The Hunts’ latest release consists of 10 songs that tell a tale of youthful memories, conquering fears and aching hearts. “Many of our songs are about our lives,” Jennifer Hunt says. “We’ve had so many experiences, and it’s amazing that we get to go through life’s ups, downs and in-betweens with each other.”

And TCC has been part of their journey. “From early on, we decided to home school, and when it was time for college, TCC was the place for us,” says Sandy Hunt. “With our traveling, TCC’s online courses enabled our children to continue their education while on the road. Holly Estrada (admissions coordinator) has been an amazing help with scheduling and support.”

The oldest girls, twins Jennifer and Jessica, 23, got their start at TCC. Jennifer completed an associate degree in photography, and when home, she captures weddings, graduations and babies. Jessica completed one year at TCC before being offered a music scholarship at Old Dominion University. Brothers Joshua, 21, and Jonathan, 20, are a few courses shy of completing associate degrees in civil engineering technology. Jordan, 18, and Justin, 16, are pursuing general studies degrees, and Jamison, 15, still doing high school work, will join his siblings at TCC soon.

The group performed during the Chesapeake Campus’ last Spring Jam. “We love TCC, and it was great to be back there sharing our songs,” Jennifer says.
