Student Art and Design Exhibition opens at TCC’s Visual Arts Center

Tidewater Community College’s Visual Arts Center will host the 43rd Annual Student Art and Design Exhibition from March 22 to April 20. The event features more than 200 works, including studio arts, photography, graphic design, ceramics and glassblowing, created by students for art classes since last May.

The event’s awards presentation is March 29 at 11 a.m. at the Commodore Theatre, 421 High St., in Portsmouth. The opening reception will follow at noon at the Visual Arts Center at 340 High St. Events are free and open to the public.

Leigh Anne Chambers, executive director at the Rawls Museum Arts in Courtland, is this year’s judge. During the event, Chambers will present more than $4,900 in awards in recognition of artistic excellence.

Programming for the exhibition includes illustrated lectures by a visiting artist and a visiting art historian. On March 25, Rebecca Kamen, professor emerita at Northern Virginia Community College, will present “Art as a Catalyst for Making the Invisible, Visible.”

On April 9, Jeff Harrison, chief curator at the Chrysler Museum of Art, will present “Inventing the New Chrysler.” Both programs begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Visual Arts Center in rooms 208 and 209.
