TCC alum lands dream job in network security
Sweeney has had a long and varied educational career, but enhanced his skills by taking cyber security classes with Professor Rob Guess at the Chesapeake Campus of Tidewater Community College.
“Rob’s curriculum is cutting edge and well rounded. My TCC courses definitely helped me expand my skill sets and prepared me for advancement in my field,” Sweeney said. “And the connections I made with other students have proven to be invaluable.”
A career switcher at age 30, Sweeney worked as an electrician helper right out of high school. As a first-generation college student, he never really looked too far into the future. “I was making enough money to survive, but it was difficult to think about taking the step to invest in education. In 2000, I took the chance after finding my niche with computers.”
Sweeney credits Guess with enhancing his knowledge and opening doors in government contracting for him. “Rob believed in me, and his recommendation enabled me to gain a position that became a vital stepping stone in my career.”
“I can honestly say that I enjoy going to work every day,” Sweeney added. “I recently landed my dream job, and it’s even better than I expected it to be.”
With 13 years in Information Technology, Sweeney has earned certifications in CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, Microsoft Certified Professional for Microsoft Windows XP, CompTIA Security+, Certified Information Systems Security Professional, and Payment Card Industry Qualified Security Assessor.
Sweeney’s son, Sean Jr., is also studying Information Technology at TCC with the goal of working in network security.
