TCC Chorus presents “Meditation” during spring concerts

A warm blend of soprano, bass, tenor and alto voices joined together to sing an original work, “Mediation – There is a Solitude of Space,” at Tidewater Community College’s Chorus’ spring concerts held April 22 and 24. A madrigal style song set to the Emily Dickinson poem “Meditation” was composed for the choir by Bruce Frazier, a professor of commercial and electronic music at Western Carolina University.

“Meditation” and two other songs were commissioned to celebrate 10 years of TCC Chorus, accompanied by Michael Regan. “Singing this piece was the nicest way to celebrate the success of the choir, which began with a handful of students and has grown to include more than 25 singers,” said David Warren, music instructor and head of TCC Chorus.“And now that we have your attention, we hope you will join us when we present the final two songs next fall.”

The concert featured songs from Old Masters to Twentieth Century to Living Composers, African-American Tradition and Popular Styles. In addition, some pieces were performed in the original languages in which they were composed.

Choir singers are Meghan Armstrong, Jeremy Cebrian, Rebecca Coates, Timothy Cooley, Ta’hirah Davis, Ross Ellis, Deseree Freeman, Troy Gale, Brittany Halikman, Christyna Heckstall, Julian Kabet, William Kelly, Jerisha LaGuer, Raquel Martinez, Amy Miller, Tony Monk, Hannah Morgan, Katye Newhouse, Kathy Palmer, Carrie Parsons, Gerrie Phibbs, Tevin Phillips, Catherine Schweitzer, Eric Staggers, Kathleen Tarumoto, Kelsi Weaver and Brent Wooden.
