TCC, HRUHCA partner to deliver pipelayer training program

Tidewater Community College will graduate its inaugural pipelayer training class in May.

The training stems from a partnership between TCC and the Hampton Roads Utility and Heavy Contractors Association (HRUHCA) and is designed to help meet workforce needs in the high-demand area of pipelaying, where a skills gap exists.

Pipelayers perform initial groundwork for construction by laying down and positioning pipes that provide sewage disposal and drainage of water. The additional training prepares high-potential employees to take on increased responsibility and leadership roles.

The eight students in the current class are employed by participating companies Trident Civil, Bissette Construction and Gaston Brothers Utilities.

“Partnering with TCC to bring the pipelayer training program has proved to be an effective way to address the lack of a skilled workforce in the Hampton Roads region and has given our member firms the ability to reward their employees who have already demonstrated high potential,” said Stephanie Rogers, executive director of HRUHCA.

The training includes modules on job site safety, rigging, cutting pipe, gaskets and joints, trench safety, foundation stabilization and testing pipe.  Students receive two certifications upon completion of the coursework.

“The support of HRUHCA member companies and vendors is what makes this partnership successful,” said Randy Betz, program administrator for TCC’s Construction Trades Academy.

Grant funding through Opportunity Inc., may be available for qualified employers to offset employee training costs.

Classes are held two nights per week and one Saturday per month at TCC’s Advanced Trades Training Facility in Portsmouth.
