TCC presents musical offerings to ring in the season

Legendary jazz trombonist Bill Watrous will perform with Tidewater Community College’s Blue Moon Jazz Ensemble on Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Roper Performing Arts Center in downtown Norfolk. Also performing are special guests from Swirl, a local jazz group.

Watrous will also present two master classes at no cost to students or community members with the titles “Jazz Trombone: Working the Chops!” and “Workin’ with the Rhythm Section!” The classes will be held on Dec. 4 from Noon – 2 p.m. and 2 – 4 p.m. Both classes will be held in the Roper Center.

In addition, TCC Chorus will present its holiday concert on Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Roper Center at 340 Granby Street.

This concert features Daniel Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata, a short major work in three movements. Christmas Cantata was composed in 1957 for a December concert featuring the New England Conservatory of Music Chorus.

This concert will also feature the premier performance of a new work by local composer Elizabeth J. Atkinson, “Eternal Life,” which is scheduled for publication in spring of 2016.

TCC Chorus will also perform a selection of seasonal pieces in English, Latin and Spanish.

Parking is available on the street, and in three garages: MacArthur Center Mall, Freemason Street and Bank Street.

The concerts are free and open to the public.
