TCC program offers certified training in telecommunications

Tidewater Community College is launching a training program geared toward those interested in telecommunications careers, especially military-related students.

The Communication Connectivity Technology Academy offers an array of specialized industry recognized courses developed by the telecommunications industry to train students in a variety of communications technologies.

“The emphasis is on employability,” said Bruce Brunson, executive director of TCC’s Center for Military and Veterans Education. “We can start a student from ground zero, have them complete the academy and help them find employment with a living wage.”

Certified training is available in seven different modules ranging from Telecommunication Technologies to Audio/Visual Entertainment Systems to Energy Management Systems. Each module offers a hands-on curriculum designed to prepare students for a professional future with the knowledge and skills needed by employers in electrical, data, telephone, cable and computer networking industries.

Modules can be taken individually or as a package. Each module is approximately 30 to 40 hours in length broken into four-hour classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings and an all-day Saturday class. The first module begins April 5, and modules continue through July 19.

While geared toward military-related veterans, this pilot program is open to all. Each module ranges in cost from $300 to $790. The Veterans Administration has approved this program for use of GI Bill Benefits.
