TCC recognized by U.S. Veterans Magazine as top veteran-friendly school

U.S. Veterans Magazine announced its “Best of the Best” list this week, recognizing Tidewater Community College as a top veteran-friendly school.

Nearly 15,000 of TCC’s 44,393 students in the 2012-13 academic year were veterans, active duty military or dependent family members. Last November, TCC opened the Center for Military and Veterans Education (CMVE), which is dedicated to providing timely, responsive and effective academic continuing education, training and support to military-related students and their families.

“The CMVE is designed to be the national model for providing comprehensive, high-quality student services that meet the current and future needs of our military-related students,” said Executive Director Bruce Brunson. “The military is not CMVE’s secondary job. It is our only job!”

The CMVE is also a resource for veterans seeking employment.

“There is no shortage of jobs and there is no shortage of employers looking to hire veterans for jobs,” Brunson said. “The problem comes in connecting the two, and that’s another service we provide at the CMVE.”

The magazine’s annual review evaluates the nation’s employers, initiatives, government agencies and educational institutions. This year’s winners, which also include top veteran-friendly companies and top government and law enforcement agencies, are listed in the summer issue of the magazine.

Earlier this year, TCC was also recognized by GI Jobs magazine as a Military Friendly School.
