TCC recognized for being “military-friendly college”

Nearly 15,000 of TCC’s 44,393 students in the 2012-13 academic year were veterans, active duty military or dependent family members. In November 2012, TCC opened the Center for Military and Veterans Education (CMVE), which is dedicated to providing timely, responsive and effective academic continuing education, training and support to military-related students and their families.

“At TCC, we consider it great stewardship to be military supportive,” said Randy Rice, director, military academic programs at the CMVE. “Serving those who have served is a privilege — every day — and we are honored to be entrusted with that opportunity.”

Among the attributes considered in evaluating institutions for inclusion in the guide are the flexibility of online learning options, extent of transfer credits accepted by degree level, on-campus ROTC, Servicemember Opportunity Colleges (SOC) participation, on-campus active duty/veteran assistance, the support provided to the families of service members, faculty trained in veteran reintegration issues, presence on military installations, and full-time counselors trained in veteran-specific mental health concerns.

“Our staff used strict criteria to evaluate the submissions of the respondents, and we had a record number of schools participating this year. We believe the guide serves as an invaluable tool for both education services officers and transition officers when advising servicemembers about their educational opportunities,” said Kelly Fodel, MAE’s editor.
