TCC recognizes the passing of Thomas Moss Jr.

Thomas Moss Jr., former speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates and former Norfolk city treasurer, died on Nov. 26, 2015. He was 87. Tidewater Community College’s Norfolk Campus was named in his honor.

The Norfolk Campus was part of the original campus master plan for the Virginia Community College System. Its doors opened in January 1997 as a result of a combined effort with the City of Norfolk in planning a downtown campus. Moss’ efforts to establish the campus were recognized by TCC leaders then and now.

A Norfolk native, Moss was born Oct. 3, 1928. He attended city schools before getting an engineering degree from Virginia Tech and a law degree from the University of Richmond.

A TCC scholarship was founded in his name, providing educational funds to excelling students in every discipline. The Thomas Moss Scholars Fund was established in 2000 as a cash award to recognize the accomplishments of students whose academic achievement and leadership have reached the highest levels. The student must be enrolled full-time at the Norfolk Campus.

TCC’s Norfolk Campus is strategically located in the cultural, business and theater district. The campus includes the Jeanne and George Roper Performing Arts Center, formerly the historic Loews State Theater, as well as a student center that complements the landscape and includes an outdoor gathering space just off Granby Street.

The family will receive friends on Dec. 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Ave., Norfolk. A memorial service will be held for Moss on Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 1301 Colley Ave., Norfolk.
