TCC wins Workforce Innovation Award from Opportunity, Inc.

Tidewater Community College has received the Educational Institution Award at the inaugural Workforce Innovation Awards presented by Opportunity, Inc.

TCC, the largest provider of higher education and workforce solution services in Hampton Roads, is a strategic partner with Opportunity, Inc., which helps local job seekers find employment and provides access and payment for training for those needing to update their skills. More than 150 Opportunity, Inc., participants enrolled in a TCC training program last year.

The award singled out TCC’s Job Skills Training Program’s Youth Career Academy, which provides a comprehensive approach to workforce development training and employment for out-of-school youth with barriers to employment. Comprehensive assessments, intensive counseling, internships, workforce readiness training, pre-secured employment and on-the-job follow-up are all key components of the holistic approach implemented by the Youth Career Academy.

In addition, the award recognized the college’s commitment to inspiring students to seek excellence in education through dual-enrollment courses and by offering opportunities to military-related students.

“This award is a true indication of the good work TCC’s Center for Workforce Solutions is doing in our community,” said Corey McCray, vice president for workforce solutions. “Our commitment to innovative workforce solutions through quality training and course offerings for all students is paramount.”

TCC President Edna V. Baehre-Kolovani accepted the award for the college at a ceremony on Sept. 16.
