TCC’s Chesapeake Campus Student Center recognized with ACUI design award

Tidewater Community College’s Chesapeake Campus Student Center was awarded a 2016 Facility Design Award of Excellence by the Association of College Unions International (ACUI).

The award was presented to Jeff Dunbar, director of the student center, and Kim Smith, associate principal, VMDO Architects, at an ACUI awards ceremony held March 22 in New Orleans.

The ACUI Facility Design Awards was created to encourage and recognize excellence in the design of student-centered facilities that support campus community building and student learning.

To be eligible for the awards, all entries must be college union or campus life facility projects built anywhere in the world; must have been completed, occupied and in service prior to entry in this program; and must have been completed since Dec. 1, 2009.

TCC has student centers on each of its four campuses, the first opening on the Norfolk Campus in 2011.

The Chesapeake Campus Student Center, a 60,000-square-foot multipurpose building, opened in 2014. It features dining options, study areas, a fitness center, a basketball court, gaming rooms, a student leader development suite, a TCC Barnes & Noble distribution center, onsite child care and meeting spaces with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment.
