There’s a growing need for diesel technicians to maintain and repair the fleets of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment in Hampton Roads. The employment rate for diesel technicians and mechanics is predicted to rise by 15 percent between 2010 and 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Tidewater Community College’s Career Studies Certificate in Diesel Engine Technology gives you the skills necessary to secure an in-demand job in the diesel service industry as a diesel technician. Students develop the skills necessary to repair and maintain diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. This curriculum offers an in-depth background in diesel fundamentals through theory and hands-on instruction.

TCC’s Regional Automotive Center in Chesapeake houses seven cutting edge automotive, diesel and marine technology training labs.

Earn valuable industry credentials! Successful completion of this program prepares you to take the H2 (for transit buses), S2 (for school buses) or T2 (for medium-heavy trucks) Diesel Engines Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exams.

What does this program cost?

TCC’s Career Studies Certificate in Diesel Engine Technology consists of 2 semesters of full-time study, with classes held mainly at the Regional Automotive Center in Chesapeake. Classes may also be taken on a part-time basis.

24 credits x $185.35 per credit = $4,448.40 (not including textbooks and supplies)

Students are responsible for purchasing their own personal protection equipment, including steel-toed work shoes and safety glasses. Students are also required to obtain a TCC diesel technology uniform shirt. 

Where can you go?

Graduates are prepared for entry or advancement in the diesel repair industry as a diesel service technician or diesel engine specialist. You can also apply the credits you earn toward TCC’s Associate of Applied Science in Diesel Technology
